Qualifying – n. The act of filing to be on the ballot

This is the week for most state and local candidates to “qualify” for the ballot, meaning they are filing their official papers. Senate and Congressional candidates, along with most judicial candidates, qualified in May. This qualifying period ends at Noon on Friday.

The run for office, you file paperwork at any time before the election designating that you are raising money in an effort to further your candidacy. Then you file additional paperwork during the qualifying period that officially puts your name on the ballot. Going in to this qualifying period, there are still a number of candidates in the Bay Area that are unopposed.
