The controversial initiative to create an elected Hillsborough County mayor has died for 2006. The Tampa Tribune is reporting that the Taking Back Hillsborough County Political Committee has failed to submit enough valid signatures to get their measure on the ballot.
Taking Back Hillsborough Political Committee fell 3,034 valid signatures short of the required 37,202 to put the question on the November ballot, said Buddy Johnson, Hillsborough’s elections supervisor.
Mary Ann Stiles, the Tampa lawyer who has pushed for the new position, vowed today to pursue the issue for a future ballot.
I hope when Mary Ann Stiles and her supporters bring the issue back, that it is designed better and more well thought out. As I have written before, there were some problems with the current proposal.
The 2008 version will be interesting to see.
