GOP Slights Tampa, Picks Minneapolis for 2008 Republican Convention

Breaking News: MSNBC reported from Republican sources that the Republican National Committee has selected Minneapolis-St. Paul for the 2008 Republican Convention. Tampa was one of the finalists, and had been reported as being the favorite. Tampa was also a finalist for the 2004 convention that was awarded to New York City.

UPDATE: This is taken from the Minnesota Public Radio website:

Republican sources say the party has picked the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul for the 2008 presidential convention.

The selection was expected to be announced later today, said the Republican source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The choice of the Twin Cities would provide a major political punch for the GOP, capturing the media markets in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota – all battleground states in the 2004 election.

I was a big proponent of Tampa’s bid, but I guess the hurricane season was just too much of a psychological problem. The fact that we’ve had a light season this year didn’t dillute the memories of 2004 and 2005.

Well, there’s always 2012.
