Could Obama & McCain Tie at 269-269?

Believe it or not, the answer is yes.

And it’s not that far out of the question in an election year that has seen some strange twists and turns.

Consider the map below (made using the site 270toWin.com, click to see a larger version):

Using current leaders at RealClearPolitics.com, I give the state’s electoral votes to Obama or McCain, depending on the polls… Then I make a small change: I give Ohio to McCain and Michigan to Obama, even though the other candidate leads.

So, with this map – it’s easy to see how we could be seeing the first U.S. House of Representatives deciding the election since the early 1800s.

There are a few other possible combinations… starting from my map… here are a couple:
* Give Michigan and Iowa to McCain and give Ohio and New Hampshire to Obama — tied at 269.
* Give Ohio, Missouri, and New Hampshire to Obama and give New Mexico, Colorado, and Pennsylvania to McCain — tied at 269

Still, I think the election will not be that close… just noting that it’s possible.

  1. Vince says:

An Electoral Tie means an Obama Presidency, since the House’s Democratic majority will vote for their own. McCain needs to win outright.
